Framus Mayfield Pro v.s. Legacy

The Guitar Master proudly presents Framus Pro series “Mayfield” models.

A semi-hollow model that can be widely used in different styles. From smooth jazz, blues to pop songs and also rocking in overdrive with the raw edge to it is no problem. With a choice of 2 different models that sound completely different due to the different specifications, we invite you to test this model that breathes history in The Guitar Master Shop.

The Guitar Master is the only dealer in Europe and beyond with the largest collection of Framus guitars. In this blog I will go into more detail about the 2 different models.

The models

The Mayfield comes in 2 variants.

Mayfield Pro  > Mayfield Legacy

Wood types (body, top & neck)

The Mayfield Pro has a maple body with a maple top in combination with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. If you look a little deeper into maple, you will discover that you can expect a strong, clear tone from maple. A guitar is often a combination of wood types. Framus made a conscious decision to build the Mayfield Pro with a body & sides made of maple plus the neck. As described, you can find a rosewood fingerboard on this model. Rosewood (or rosewood) gives a warm sound and with a little more bass at the bottom, this ensures the right balance in sound with the maple wood types.

The Mayfield Legacy is a world of difference compared to the Pro. The body, top and neck are made of mahogany. This model therefore sounds completely different from the maple variant. Come and really hear and feel the difference in our shop. Why? I can explain the difference in sound between Maple vs Mahogany, but feeling and listening yourself says so much more because your ears are different from mine.

Mahogany is often used as the body of a guitar, for example a Les Paul. The warm sound of this type of wood is characteristic. So on paper the Legacy already sounds warmer than the Pro. On the Legacy you will once again find a rosewood fretboard.

We would like to invite you to feel and hear the difference.

Plek Fretwork

Naturally, all teambuilt guitars from Framus Guitars are fitted and you therefore get the best neck you can find with the best frets. Below are the specs regarding frets.

All teambuilt guitars from Framus come with Plek Fretwork. This way you get the best possible fret on your guitar. No one can touch this with their naked eyes and hands. I would like to refer you to plek.com and take a look at what plek means.

IFT - Invisible Fretwork TechnologyThe IFT system enables fret installation with perfect precision and previously unrivaled, consistent quality. Compared to traditional fretting techniques, the fret slots are not cut across the entire fingerboard. Instead, two millimeters of wood are left on each side. What does this mean now? This means that twisting the neck is no longer possible because there is no tension on the neck through the frets. This also virtually rules out excellent feeding.

Due to weather influences or because a manufacturer has not dried the wood long enough, the neck could still function. At Framus, the wood is first dried naturally for a number of years before it goes into a drying machine. IFT prevents this. This in combination with the spot work gives you the best neck possible at Framus.

The specs of the fretwork:

22 Jumbo frets, Nickel silver (width: 2.9 mm / 0,114" height: 1,3 mm / 0,05")

Fingerboard radius 305mm / 12”

Scale Lenght 628mm / 24.75”

Pickups

Due to the 2 different types of wood in the models you will already hear a huge difference and this is further enhanced by the different pickups in the models.

Mayfield Pro

This model contains pickups from Seymour Duncan.

SH-1 ´59 (neck)

SH-4 JB (bridge)

SH-1'59 (NECK)

The '59 bridge model (SH-1) is a vintage output humbucker that is great for rock, blues and more. The vintage-inspired coils give it an airy quality that sits firmly in the P.A.F. family, and the alnico 5 bar magnet and vacuum wax pots make it compatible with lighter guitar strings and louder amplifiers than were ever used in the 1950s. The result is a pickup with a lot of old-school tonal character, but with a brighter top end and a slightly more compressed sound.

The '59 neck model is one of the most popular pickups because it is so versatile. Like its bridge position brother, the 1959 neck is designed in the spirit of the original P.A.F. humbuckers from the fifties, with a sweet sustain and a warm, full tone that still has a bright attack. S.D has made a few refinements to modernize the design slightly and make it more adaptable to different styles. The highs are slightly boosted for better pick attack clarity, and the mids are slightly arched for an open, smooth sound that's great for maintaining the clarity of the individual notes in a chord. The '59 neck was born to accompany the '59 bridge, but countless players pair it with a high-output bridge humbucker like a JB or Custom. It is also a popular choice for Telecasters with humbucker routing

SH-4 JB (BRIDGE)

Mayfield Legacy

The pickups are again from Seymour Duncan. Framus and S.D. have a long history together and why not? Seymour Duncan makes awesome pickups. Of course you can choose from other brands in consultation if you would like.

P90

Hot P90 pickups sound fantastic in combination with these woods. A P90 in the neck with a P90 in the bridge.

The Vintage P90's are wound with plain enamel wire and adds extra mojo by winding them on the same Leesona winder used at the old Gibson factory in the 1950s. The pickups come with vintage braided single-core connecting cable and are wax-encased for squeak-free performance.

The dual alnico 5 bar magnets and short, wide bobbins give the P90 its unique tonal character with a powerful midrange and a higher output than most other types of single coils.

In the neck position, this pickup sounds sweet and smooth, delivering thick, fat-sounding chords. In the bridge position this pickup has sparkling mids that really give it a gritty, open tone. Chords have a nice harmonic flourish and some notes are glassy and in the foreground.
